I've been asked this question numerous times when I taught animal and nature communication in the past. More times than I can count on both hands. The answer is yes and no. And I'd like to share with you my explanation in simple language. Let's start with the 'no" answer first.
The animals of this planet are here for 3 basic reasons:
#1 - to balance the eco-systems
#2 - sustenance for humans
#3 - to be our companions
Unfortunately, humanity are mis-treating our animals in #2 in our processes. And this needs to be changed drastically. All of nature are here to help support humanity in our awakening to our own divinity.
As we grow in consciousness we'll make changes in our lives to reflect our higher consciousness, our true nature. And everything we experience and those who support us will also begin to change and evolve. We will be supported with newer species of animals, plants and minerals. Nothing remains the same. Evolution is a progression. How fast or how slow is very much dependent on the individual human and also as a collective.
So what happens to the animals? When their purpose has been served they can return to their home planet. This is their agreement with Source when they were first invited to participate on planet Earth. And the other condition is if the planet is no longer hospital to a particular species, that species can choose to return to their home planet before their purpose is fully served.
And another question that was asked quite a fair bit is 'can humans come back as animals or plants?' Here's my answer:
A long time ago, the soul of a human had many opportunities to support humanity by being part of the energies in nature. But that stopped when it was realized that coming back to Earth as humans have far greater impact. Why? Because as humans, when we awaken, we can create the solutions to old problems - poverty, pollution, hunger, diseases. As humans we can create new ways of living in peace and harmony with all, regardless of the color of our skin, religion or gender. And we have many Helpers to support us in our awakening to this awareness.

Spirit Guides
Ascended Masters
our Higher Self
the teachers in Nature
and so many more...
And part of my earlier spiritual work is to channel messages from the teachers in Nature. Each species has its own wisdom to share with those who have forgotten that they too have their own inner wisdom. There is no judgment from our Helpers, physical and non-physical. This is the way of it. Everything that is created for humanity is done out of LOVE, for our awakening to our own LOVE that waits patiently each day to be expressed through us.
And now let me tackle the "yes" answer to the original question. I will keep it simple and straight to the point.
Our animal companions or pets, a term we are more familiar with, are the beings who have signed up to experience a domestic life with humans. Many would like to understand the human nature and be with them to observe and learn, and to assist their human companions to better prepare themselves when they evolve spiritually and decide to begin living as humans on Earth in their future incarnations. How much better can it be than to live amongst humans. Our pets may not necessarily be aware, but their souls do.
